Minimize INSPIRE-Compliant Metadata

In Data Warehouse phase 2, all Copernicus Contributing Mission Entities (CCMEs) are required to introduce an additional metadata file that meets, or exceeds, the requirements of the EC INSPIRE directive. Development of the INSPIRE.xml metadata is part of a CCME to CDS interfaces upgrade, with the extra metadata file becoming available within the Copernicus Product Package delivered with each EO product as the upgrade is completed by each CCME.

The INSPIRE directive aims to create a European Union (EU) spatial data infrastructure. The directive is enabling the sharing of environmental spatial information amongst public sector organisations and facilitating public access to spatial information across Europe. Led by ESA, the Data providers agreed a common approach to delivering a new XML format metadata file that not only complies with the INSPIRE directive but also ensures a greater degree of consistency and harmonisation across missions. Users will then have ISO (19115 and 19139) standards compliant metadata covering dataset language, reference, description, geographic location, temporal extent and date of revision, responsible party contact information, resource location and quality information including product lineage.

The specification for the CSCDA INSPIRE.xml file encourages the data providers to include additional quality indicators in line with the Quality Assurance for Earth Observation (QA4EO) framework principle on traceability.

The CCMEs having completed the development and providing INSPIRE-compliant metadata are listed in the below table:

Further missions from CCMEs will be added to the table when they provide INSPIRE-compliant metadata within their CSCDA data deliveries. Until then, they continue providing native metadata.
